Pictured here is Marjorie P. Madden, whom Marjorie Park is named after. Marjorie co-founded the Museum of Outdoor Arts with her husband, John W. Madden Jr., and their daughter, Cynthia Madden Leitner in 1981.
History
The park was named “Samson Park” for many years after the Yorkshire Terrier family pet of MOA Co-Founders John and Marjorie Madden. The park was then renamed in memory of the late Marjorie P. Madden on May 27, 2015.
Marjorie was a believer in making art a part of everyday life. As a fine artist, she had an eye for beauty and an affinity for nature. She was a painter, a designer and a collector of the fine arts. With an appreciation for the magic in fairy tales and fantasies, Marjorie and her husband, John W. Madden, commissioned sculptor Harry Marinsky to create the seven bronze sculptures representing the story of “Alice in Wonderland” showcased in Marjorie Park.
Marjorie had a maxim, a simple formula for dealing with life’s complexities: “If it doesn’t make you smile,” she said, “just walk away.” Marjorie also had the gift of hospitality. She put the “art” in “party”: family festivities, gatherings for red-letter-days, milestone celebrations and memory-making events of all stripes.
Which is how Marjorie Park came to be created in her memory as a space of artful grace and a place of merrymaking, an off-the-beaten-path in an English garden setting where you can walk away from the everyday, let your imagination wander and be the hero or heroine of your own story.
Welcome to Marjorie Park!
