Fall 2017 Artist in Residence (August 22 – December 22, 2017)

MOA welcomed Craig Marshall Smith as our Fall 2017 Artist in Residence.

Colorado Abstract Expressionist painter, Craig Marshall Smith, was born in Flint, Michigan, in 1947. He received an MFA in 1973 from UCLA, where Richard Diebenkorn was his painting professor. Smith’s inspirations have been the paintings of Diebenkorn, Franz Kline, and Jim Dine, as well as draftsmanship and calligraphy. Smith taught drawing at the university level until retiring in 2003 as a Professor Emeritus.

As a writer, Smith was a finalist for the Colorado Book of the Year in the Creative Non-Fiction category for his first book, This is not a Dachshund, a compilation of his weekly opinion columns that appear in eight Douglas County, Colorado, newspapers. Smith has since self-published four more books, also compilations of his columns. His latest books, Greenhills, Ohio and Greenhills, Colorado are available on Amazon.

Smith produced a new body of work, which included collaborations with several other artists presented in an exhibition at MOA beginning in January 2018. The studio was open for visitation/observation during Smith’s residency.
