About Ivan Mestrovic

Ivan Meštrović was a Croatian sculptor, revered as one of the country’s greatest artists of the 20th century. He attended the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna, and became largely influenced by the Secession. He also found inspiration in the work of Rodin and Michelangelo, and mainly produced figures in bronze, wood, and marble. He remained loyal to Yugoslav patriotism, as many of his finest works are monuments dedicated to the memory of historic heroes who struggled for freedom. Later in his career he focused mainly on biblical subjects.1 Lost in deep concentration, Luke the Evangelist projects a powerful energy that beckons the viewer to share a moment of quiet contemplation. The inner strength of this monumental thinker creates an aura of stability and wellbeing.
