About the Exhibition
On October 10, 2015 MOA will debut its latest exhibition POLYSEMIC by local artist Joel Swanson. The museum will host an opening reception on October 10 from 6-9pm at its indoor galleries located inside the Englewood Civic Center at 1000 Englewood Pkwy, Englewood, CO 80110. The event will include libations and hors d'oeuvres and is FREE and open to the public.
POLYSEMIC is defined as "a word or sign that has a number of meanings, interpretations or understandings." Artist Joel Swanson will present his work throughout all of MOA's indoor gallery spaces including: MOA's Main Gallery, Gallery C, the Sound Gallery and the White Box Gallery.
"The exhibition is a continuation of MOA's 2015 theme of Altered Reality," said MOA President and Executive Director Cynthia Madden Leitner. "We have been watching Joel Swanson's work evolve for a few years and are thrilled to present this solo exhibition at our museum."
Linguistic and literary theory inform Swanson's work, which ranges from digital art to sculpture to interactive installation. Thematically his work explores the technologies of language, their materialities, and their modes of signification. Specifically, he revisits the questions posed by the Conceptual language artists of the 1960s and 1970s, but in light of contemporary digital technologies. He is particularly drawn to the complexities, glitches and quirks within linguistic systems and within his work he focuses on those spaces where language breaks down.
"The works in this exhibition are translations, transformations and transpositions of textual forms; they challenge us to rethink the various ways in which language permeates and shapes our daily lives," said artist Joel Swanson.
Swanson is an artist, designer and writer who serves as the Director of the Technology, Arts & Media Program at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He teaches classes on digital art, media theory, and the history of design. He received his Masters of Fine Art at the University of California, San Diego with a specialty in Computing and the Arts.
His artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally including the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art, The Eli and Edythe Broad Museum, The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery of Toronto, the North Miami Museum of Contemporary Art and the Orange Country Museum of Contemporary Art.
POLYSEMIC will be on display through February 27, 2016.
