About Marzocco Lions

Lions hold a prolific presence in Italian iconography, representing the Florentine Republic. Donatello’s (1386-1466) Marzocco (1418-20) symbolizes the Florentine qualities of pride, strength, and generosity. Many replicas exist today, but the original is carved out of pietra serena, and is in the Bargello National Museum in Florence, Italy. Another copy is in the Piazza della Signoria, Florence.
